Overview

Behavioral health is a multidisciplinary field concerned with the connection between behaviors and overall mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing. It encompasses the study and care of mental health conditions, substance use, and the everyday habits and choices that influence health, drawing on biological, psychological, and social perspectives to understand why people act as they do and how those actions affect outcomes. The field spans the prevention, assessment, and treatment of mental health and substance use disorders as well as the promotion of healthy behaviors through counseling, behavior change strategies, and integrated models that link mental and physical care. Self-monitoring, structured measurement, and supportive systems are recurring tools for sustaining behavior change and self-management. Peer-reviewed research within this collection touches on these themes, including a theoretical and empirical review of self-monitoring in self-management and adaptive behavior change, and a systems-based framework describing a model of mental health hygiene for sustainable wellbeing. By integrating insights across disciplines, behavioral health aims to improve individual and population outcomes through interventions that address the determinants of behavior. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access articles relevant to the study, promotion, and care of behavioral health.
