Overview

HIV infection is a chronic viral disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus, a retrovirus that targets and progressively depletes CD4-positive T lymphocytes, impairing cell-mediated immunity and, if untreated, advancing to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Transmission occurs through blood, sexual contact, and from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding. Diagnosis relies on antibody/antigen assays and confirmatory testing, while combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) suppresses viral replication, restores immune function, and reduces transmission. Disease monitoring centers on CD4 counts, viral load, and management of opportunistic infections and comorbidities. Research organized under this topic addresses the clinical and epidemiological breadth of HIV infection. Studies characterize serodiscordant couples and antenatal prevalence, demographics and hospitalization outcomes in the cART era, and immunological markers such as CD4 count, viral load, and antioxidant capacity in treated patients. Additional work examines PrEP availability and adherence among healthcare workers and female sex workers, screening and linkage to prophylaxis in primary care, risk factors identified at counseling and testing centers, and sociocultural barriers to caring for HIV-affected orphans. Spanning multiple regions, this peer-reviewed literature informs diagnosis, treatment optimization, and the social context of living with HIV.
