Overview
Young adults constitute the developmental stage spanning the late teens through the thirties, a period of emerging adulthood characterized by consolidation of identity, autonomy, intimate relationships, educational and occupational establishment, and the maturation of neurocognitive and emotional regulation systems. From a psychiatric and behavioral-health perspective, this transition carries distinctive mental-health significance: many psychiatric disorders have their onset in this window, and patterns of stress, sleep, social connection, and health behavior established here shape long-term wellbeing. Research relevant to this topic examines loneliness and bedtime procrastination and their interconnection among young adults, depression and executive dysfunction in young adults and its implications for therapy, and orthorexia nervosa and quality of life in a young-adult sample. Related work addresses sleep and the effects of exercise in young people, psychosocial predictors of health behavior, and cardiometabolic and vascular changes in young adulthood. Collectively these studies illustrate the interplay of psychological, behavioral, and physiological factors that define health in this age group. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the mental health, behavior, and development of young adults, including mood and executive function, disordered eating, sleep, loneliness, and the psychosocial transitions that distinguish emerging adulthood within the broader scope of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
