Overview
Mental health is a state of psychological, emotional, and social wellbeing in which an individual can cope with ordinary stresses, function productively, sustain relationships, and realize their capacities. It is not merely the absence of disorder but a positive dimension of health shaped by biological, psychological, and social determinants, including early development, family environment, socioeconomic conditions, stigma, trauma, and access to care. In children and adolescents, mental health is a developmental construct: the foundations laid in childhood and the transitions of adolescence influence lifelong emotional regulation, identity, and risk for psychiatric disorder. Promotion, prevention, early identification, and treatment are core public-health and clinical priorities. Research relevant to this topic examines affiliate stigma and compassion satisfaction among mental health service providers, religion and mental health, disparities among LGBTQ+ youth, mental health correlates in cancer survivors, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, compassion fatigue among psychiatric staff, and community-based mentoring and coaching to promote mental health in school-aged children. Related work addresses the global measurement of mental health and the consequences of emotional repression for wellbeing. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the determinants, promotion, assessment, and treatment of mental health across the lifespan, with particular relevance to child, adolescent, and family contexts.
