Overview
Nutrition is the science of how organisms obtain and use food to support growth, metabolism, maintenance, and health. In human terms it concerns the intake of energy and nutrients, including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals, and how dietary patterns influence physiological function, development, and the risk and course of disease. Nutritional status is shaped by food availability, dietary quality, life stage, and clinical condition, and both undernutrition and excess intake carry significant health consequences. Research in this field examines nutrition across the lifespan and in vulnerable groups, including dietary needs and service utilization during pregnancy, the nutritional status of adolescents and children, and the prevalence and determinants of undernutrition. It evaluates interventions such as nutrition education combined with behavioral strategies to improve fruit and vegetable consumption, culturally tailored programs to reduce cardio-metabolic risk, and specialized feeding for patients undergoing intensive treatment or surgery. The discipline also encompasses the molecular interface between diet and biology, including epigenetic effects of nutrients and the movement toward personalized nutrition. Particular attention is given to nutritional support in clinical contexts, where adequate intake influences recovery, complication rates, and quality of life. By linking diet to physiological and clinical outcomes, nutrition science informs dietary guidance, public health policy, and the management of disease through food and supplementation.
