Overview

Breast tissue is the glandular and stromal tissue of the breast, comprising milk-producing lobules, ductal epithelium, fibrous connective tissue, and adipose tissue, organised to enable lactation and subject to hormonal regulation across the life course. Its epithelial and mesenchymal components are the origin of a range of benign and malignant conditions, and histopathological, immunohistochemical, and molecular characterisation of breast tissue underpins diagnosis, grading, and treatment selection. Research relevant to this area examines primary breast sarcoma and other rare mesenchymal tumours, idiopathic granulomatous mastitis as an inflammatory lesion, and the correlation of Oncotype DX recurrence scores with insulin-receptor substrate protein expression in estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer. Allied work addresses mitotic-activity assessment by phosphohistone H3 immunostaining, Ki-67, and conventional mitotic counting in invasive carcinoma, melanoma arising in the breast with SMO mutation, and proteomic responses to targeted therapy. These studies integrate surgical pathology, molecular oncology, and immunohistochemistry to clarify how the structure and molecular features of breast tissue inform classification, prognosis, and management of breast disease. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on breast pathology, tumour biology, and the diagnostic characterisation of breast tissue.
