Overview

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own joints, causing persistent inflammation of the synovial lining that leads to pain, swelling, stiffness, and, over time, damage to cartilage and bone. It typically affects joints symmetrically and can also involve other organs, and although it can occur at any age it is most common in adults. Because RA is progressive, management focuses on reducing inflammation, controlling symptoms, slowing joint destruction, and preserving function through medication and supportive care. Within arthritis research and therapy, RA is studied across its immunology, genetics, pathology, and treatment. Work relevant to this field has discussed the movement toward precision rheumatology and more individualized approaches to care, and has reported on juvenile idiopathic arthritis through a clinical case series. Laboratory research has documented an increased number of megakaryocytes in the synovium and cartilage of arthritic joints in a mouse model, while genetic work has examined STAT4 regulatory polymorphisms, transcription factor binding sites, and their relationship to autoimmune disease. Related clinical research has addressed complications such as joint infection arising from intra-articular injection. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory joint disease.
