Overview
Neurons are the excitable cells of the nervous system that receive, integrate, and transmit information through electrical and chemical signalling. Each typically comprises dendrites, a soma, and an axon, communicating across synapses by neurotransmitter release and exhibiting plasticity that underlies learning, memory, and adaptation. Neuronal function is supported by glial cells and tightly coupled to cerebral blood flow and metabolism, and its disruption contributes to neurodegenerative, psychiatric, developmental, and pain disorders. Study of neurons spans molecular and cellular biology, electrophysiology, neurovascular coupling, and computational modelling of network activity. The research collected here reflects these themes through work on synaptic and somatic plasticity in the dentate gyrus in relation to pain perception, endogenous opioid production and music-induced analgesia, astrocyte-targeted neurovascular coupling regulating brain blood flow, metabolic redirection in Canavan disease affecting neuronal support, and computational modelling of cortical neuron firing variability in schizophrenia. Further studies address neurotoxicity and oxidative stress in the hippocampus, the effects of radiofrequency radiation, developmental gene expression in brain formation, and theories of neurodevelopmental physiopathology. Together they span neuronal signalling, plasticity, metabolism, and dysfunction. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to neuronal biology and its role in nervous-system health and disease.
