Overview
Waterborne diseases are illnesses caused by pathogenic microorganisms that are transmitted through contaminated water, whether by drinking it, using it in food preparation, or coming into contact with it. Common examples include diarrheal diseases, cholera, typhoid fever, dysentery, hepatitis A, and parasitic infections such as schistosomiasis. They are a major cause of illness and death, particularly in regions with limited access to safe water and sanitation, and their control depends on clean water supply, sanitation, hygiene, and effective public health surveillance. Within Air and Water Borne Diseases, research relevant to waterborne diseases includes the development of municipal decision-making strategies to combat them, an assessment of the proportion of waterborne diseases in children aged 0 to 5 years in Ebolowa, Cameroon, mathematical modeling of typhoid fever transmission dynamics in Harare, Zimbabwe, a study of schistosomiasis prevalence along the River Nile in Sudan, and an assessment of the water quality of the Blue Nile River. Together these works span the burden, transmission, and environmental drivers of water-related illness. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to waterborne diseases and their prevention.
