Overview

Waterborne diseases are illnesses caused by pathogenic microorganisms that are transmitted through contaminated water, whether by drinking it, using it in food preparation, or coming into contact with it. Common examples include diarrheal diseases, cholera, typhoid fever, dysentery, hepatitis A, and parasitic infections such as schistosomiasis. They are a major cause of illness and death, particularly in regions with limited access to safe water and sanitation, and their control depends on clean water supply, sanitation, hygiene, and effective public health surveillance.
