Overview
Metabolic disorders are conditions in which the normal biochemical processes that convert nutrients into energy and building blocks are disrupted, whether through inherited enzyme deficiencies, hormonal dysregulation, or acquired imbalances driven by diet and lifestyle. They include disorders of carbohydrate, lipid, protein, and mineral metabolism, ranging from monogenic inborn errors that impair specific enzymatic steps to common acquired conditions such as diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemias including familial combined hyperlipidemia, obesity, hyperuricemia, and the constellation of risk factors that constitutes metabolic syndrome. Their pathophysiology often centers on disturbances in energy storage and utilization, insulin signaling, and the handling of glucose, lipids, and amino acids, with consequences extending to the cardiovascular, hepatic, and renal systems. Diagnosis draws on biochemical and metabolomic profiling, and management combines dietary and lifestyle modification with targeted pharmacological and, where applicable, metabolic therapies. Themes in the associated literature include the molecular and metabolic pathogenesis of familial combined hyperlipidemia and its association with metabolic syndrome, amino acids and their derivatives in liver-disease pathogenesis and treatment, culturally tailored interventions to reduce cardiometabolic risk, the management of hyperuricemia, hepatic metabolomic profiling, dietary strategies for obesity reversal, and the metabolomics of type 2 diabetes. Related work addresses early vascular aging and cardiometabolic phenotypes. This journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to metabolic disorders, their biochemical basis, and their management.
