Overview

Plants are multicellular, predominantly photosynthetic eukaryotes of the kingdom Plantae, distinguished by cellulose cell walls, plastids including chloroplasts, and the capacity to convert light energy into chemical energy that sustains most terrestrial life. As primary producers they underpin food webs, regulate atmospheric composition, and supply food, fibre, fuel, and medicine. Plant biology is the comprehensive scientific study of these organisms, spanning multiple levels of organisation. Anatomy and morphology describe the structure of tissues and organs, often standardised through morpho-anatomical characterisation, while physiology examines processes such as photosynthesis, water and nutrient uptake, and responses to environmental stress. At the molecular level, the discipline investigates gene structure and regulation, including transcription-factor families such as BASIC PENTACYSTEINE proteins that bind GAGA motifs to control gene expression, and emerging regulatory molecules such as plant circular RNAs. Developmental studies address growth, differentiation, and the totipotency exploited in callus and stem-cell tissue culture. Genetics and breeding apply heritable variation to crop improvement, complemented by applied agronomy that optimises nutrition, fertilisation, and plant spacing for yield. Plant biology also encompasses pathology and protection, increasingly aided by computational tools such as deep-learning detection of foliar disease, as well as the study of medicinal and economically important species, integrating fundamental science with practical crop and resource management.
