Overview
Medicinal plants are plants that contain naturally occurring compounds with biological activity that can be used to prevent, relieve, or treat illness. Used in traditional healing systems for thousands of years and still important worldwide, they are also a major source of leads for modern pharmacology, supplying phytochemicals such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, phenolics, and essential oils that underlie many of their reported effects. The study of medicinal plants spans the identification of active constituents, the evaluation of their biological activities, and the documentation of traditional uses. Within the scope of a journal devoted to Advances in Plant Biology, research in this area has examined medicinal plants and their traditional uses, the pharmacognostic evaluation of medicinal plant leaves, and the antimicrobial and antifungal activity of plant leaf extracts against pathogens. Further work has assessed the antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of medicinal plants, the dose response of plant-derived saponins, phytochemical profiling of crude plant extracts, essential oils from plants, and the antibacterial and cytotoxic activity of plant compounds. These studies span the chemistry, biological activity, and applications of plant-derived substances. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to medicinal plants, offering researchers, students, and practitioners freely accessible scientific work.
