Overview
Medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) are plant species valued for the bioactive and volatile compounds they contain, which give them therapeutic, flavouring, or fragrance properties. Medicinal plants are used as sources of remedies and as the raw material for many pharmaceuticals, while aromatic plants yield essential oils and other constituents used in food, cosmetics, perfumery, and traditional medicine; many plants belong to both categories. Their value derives from secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenes, and phenolics, whose composition varies with species, growing conditions, and processing. The study of MAPs spans their botany, cultivation, chemistry, conservation, and the standardisation needed for safe and effective use. Within this journal's scope on plant biology, related work includes an evaluation of the physicochemical properties and mineral content of indigenous spices, which characterises the composition of aromatic plant products used for flavour and nutrition. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to medicinal and aromatic plants and the broader study of plant biology, phytochemistry, and the useful compounds plants produce.
