Overview
Leaves are the principal photosynthetic organs of plants, specialised to capture light and carbon dioxide for the synthesis of carbohydrates while regulating gas exchange and transpiration through stomata. Their structure and physiology determine plant productivity and stress responses, and they are also rich sources of phytochemicals, fibres, and medicinal compounds, making leaf tissue central to studies of plant biology, phytochemistry, and crop health. Research on leaves spans photosynthetic and biochemical function, the detection and management of foliar disease, secondary-metabolite content, and the use of leaf properties as indicators of plant and soil status. The research collected here reflects these themes through pharmacognostic evaluation of medicinal plant leaves, deep-learning detection of corn leaf diseases using transfer learning, phytochemical analysis and thin-layer chromatography of leaf extracts, investigation of antimicrobial activity in leaf, stem-bark, and root extracts, the influence of soluble biobased substances and salicylic acid on foliar pH, and the mitigation of nickel toxicity and antioxidant systems in maize seedlings. Further work addresses foliar pH as a spectroscopic indicator, redox potential of phytochemicals, and the antioxidant capacity of leafy plants. Together they span leaf physiology, disease detection, phytochemistry, and stress response.
