Crop Genetics

Crop genetics is the study of the genetic make-up of different cultivated plants. Understanding crop genetics can help breeders develop improved crop varieties and better crop management systems that are more productive, disease-resistant, and resilient to environmental stressors. By selecting for specific genetic traits, various crop species can be improved to yield higher yields, resist pests, and require limited water and fertilizer inputs. Additionally, genetic modifications in crops have led to the development of more nutritious foods and an improved global food supply. Crop genetics also allows us to better understand how crops interact with their environment and to develop more sustainable farming practices.
