Overview
Medicine is the science and applied practice concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of disease and injury, and with the maintenance of health. As a discipline it rests on the basic sciences, including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology, which together provide the mechanistic foundation for clinical reasoning. Clinical medicine spans numerous domains, from general and family practice to specialized fields addressing the cardiovascular system, neurological disease, and oncology, each combining patient assessment, investigation, and therapeutic decision-making. Contemporary practice increasingly incorporates advances such as regenerative and stem cell therapies, genetic and molecular approaches to inherited disease, and the integration of traditional and emerging formulations under formal evaluation. Effective care also depends on non-technical competencies, including communication, methodology of clinical research, and strategies to improve patient compliance, since adherence strongly influences outcomes. Sports and exercise medicine illustrates the preventive dimension, applying physical activity to manage conditions such as hypertension and heart failure. Across these areas, medicine unites direct patient care with systematic research into causation, screening, and treatment, continually refining the evidence base. Its scope therefore extends from molecular and physiological understanding to bedside management and the broader organization of therapeutic interventions for individuals and populations.
