Overview
Cell adhesion is the process by which cells attach to one another and to the extracellular matrix through specialized surface molecules, generating the mechanical cohesion and signalling contacts that organize tissues. It is mediated by distinct families of adhesion receptors: cadherins, which form calcium-dependent cell-cell junctions central to epithelial integrity; integrins, which bind matrix proteins and transduce bidirectional signals; selectins and the immunoglobulin superfamily, including vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, which govern leukocyte trafficking and endothelial interactions. Adhesion is dynamic and tightly regulated, controlling cell migration, proliferation, differentiation, and survival, and is integral to morphogenesis, wound healing, and immune responses. Its dysregulation is a recurring theme in disease: loss of cadherin-mediated adhesion accompanies epithelial-mesenchymal transition and tumour invasion, while altered expression of adhesion molecules such as VCAM-1 marks inflamed and tumoral tissue. In tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, adhesion to engineered scaffolds determines cell attachment, spreading, and the success of three-dimensional culture, as seen in biocompatible scaffolds for stem cell transplantation and calcium orthophosphate constructs for bone applications. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on cell adhesion mechanisms, adhesion-molecule expression in normal and tumoral tissue, and biomaterial scaffolds that support cellular attachment.
