Overview
Bone cells are the specialized cell populations that build, maintain, sense, and resorb the mineralized connective tissue of the skeleton. The principal types are osteoblasts, which synthesize and deposit the collagenous osteoid matrix and direct its mineralization; osteocytes, terminally differentiated osteoblasts embedded within the matrix that act as mechanosensors and orchestrate remodelling through their canalicular network; osteoclasts, multinucleated cells of hematopoietic origin that resorb bone; and bone-lining cells and skeletal stem or progenitor cells that replenish the osteogenic lineage. Their coordinated activity governs bone modelling during growth and continuous remodelling thereafter, balancing formation against resorption to regulate skeletal mass, calcium homeostasis, and structural integrity. Disturbance of this balance underlies osteoporosis, altered trabecular and marginal bone architecture, and pathological remodelling. Research relevant to this area includes calcium orthophosphate scaffolds for bone tissue engineering, longitudinal study of marginal bone levels and trabecular structure, primary bone tumours such as periosteal osteosarcoma, and biomaterial strategies to support osteogenesis and implant integration. Such work bridges cell biology, biomaterials, and clinical skeletal medicine. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on bone cell biology, mineralized-tissue structure, regenerative scaffolds, and skeletal pathology.
